About Me

A more detailed view of the photographer

I am now 50 years old and a UK resident with 25 years experience of working in the public service care sector. I am relatively new to photography as a serious art form although I have flirted with it many times in the past. I hope one day to make a living from photography but for now I am just enjoying it. The turning point has been undertaking a formal training course at a local college and being motivated by good friends and mentors. I continue to learn and I am stimulated and inspired by many famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, Irving Penn, The Bechers, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, Kaichi Tehara, Robert Capa, Lewis W. Hine and many others. My images have been described as strong and masculine and if so I offer no apology ... you can decide.

My main photographic interests are B&W film and digital of the Built Environment, Street Candid, Nature/Landscape, Social Documentary, Reportage, Travel and Portraits. I love the look of film images in a variety of formats but readily admit, that the digital world has opened up and democratised the world of photography for everyone to enjoy at many differing levels. I attempt to take photographs that tell a story but I don’t always succeed and sometimes it is enough just to record the passing moment or feeling or impression. I aim for strength and simplicity in images, with structured composition and as much detail, tone and texture as possible. Only you can judge if I have succeeded.

Travel has always been a stimulus and source of pleasure in my life in the UK and abroad and some of my images share that pleasure of the places in UK, Greece and Eastern Europe that I have enjoyed, and that hold a special place in my heart. The people, history and culture of the places I have visited are a constant source of motivation. I do not seek the exotic but rather marvel at the ordinary. I have learned that people all over the world in all kinds of places and political systems have much more in common than differences and Photography is a great common denominator.

My Equipment is semi/pro and nothing special that you can’t easily buy on the High Street except for a few DDR gems from history. The list of wants is never ending and there is always another piece of kit to buy. For now … just share my journey and feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss, display, buy or commission my work.
